White Musk's origin lies in the transition from natural to synthetic materials in perfumery. Traditionally, musk was extracted from the glandular secretions of the musk deer, a process that was both costly and harmful to the animal population. Due to the ethical and sustainability concerns, as well as the high cost, the late 19th century saw the advent of synthetic musk compounds.

The term "White Musk" was coined during this period to differentiate these synthetic molecules from their natural counterparts. Chemists developed these synthetic musks in laboratories, aiming to replicate the desirable attributes of natural musk while eliminating the harsher, animalistic odors.
